Župnijska cerkev Svetega Nikolaja

Župnijska cerkev Svetega Nikolaja

Cerkev sv. Posvetili so jo leta 1759.

Parish Church of Saint Nicholas

The Church of Saint Nicholas was mentioned already in 1334. It burnt down during an Ottoman incursion in 1578 and was rebuilt only to be consumed in another fire in 1705 together with the entire town, the rectory and the archive. But the people of Metlika didn’t give up. They built a new baroque-style church on the ruins of the old one. It was consecrated in 1759.  Run your fingers across the mighty doors and venture into the peace and quiet of the inside.

Frederic Baraga was a chaplain in Metlika before he set out to spread the Catholic religion among the American native people. During his stay in Metlika he commissioned Josip Egartner to make Way of the Cross. Baraga paid for it and displayed it in the church himself. It is pure conjecture whether living among the people of Metlika was the reason that inspired him to do that.

The parish of Metlika encompasses quite a few churches. The most well known are Tri fare in the Rosalnice village, the three churches within the same courtyard that feature the oldest still functioning baroque pipe organ in Slovenia. You can also explore the vineyard-covered hills surrounding Metlika and take a look around the Church of Saint Peter in the Drašiči village, the Church of St. Anne in the Vidošiči village, and the Church of St. Urban in the Grabrovec village. If you end up spending time in one of the nearby vineyard cottages take care not to experience the apparition of all three Saints at the same time.
